Kudos to Flipkart

Flipkart.com is my favourite online store to buy books, I have even bought a digital camera from Flipkart. Last week, my best friend told she'll be leaving for London and I wanted to send her some books, I ordered them on Flipkart and request them to deliver it within 2 days and to my surprise they delivered it they very next day, wow! Thank you Flipkart.

Leaves & Dussehra

Yesterday my best friend asked me why I didn't give her leaves on Dusshera, for a moment I thought I heard her wrong, then I asked her, "What leaf? Why?". She told me that there is a custom where people exchange leaves and receiving these leaves was considered to be lucky. Well, I didn't know any of this till now, so I did some research to find out about the custom.

Primarily, there are two tree leaves that are used, one is Apta/Apati & Shammi. Also, there are two legends surrounding the custom, one related to the Ramayana & other to Mahabharata.

Shammi leaves

One legend has it a young man named Kautsa in Ayodhya after attaining his education from his guru Varatantu offered him Gurudakshina (Gurudakshina refers to the tradition of repaying one's teacher or guru after a period of study or the completion of formal education) which he declined to accept, but when Kautsa insisted Guru Varatantu asked for 14 crore gold coins. Kautsa approached Lord Ram for help, and Lord Ram promised to help him and asked him to wait near the Shammi & Apta tree in his village. In 2 days time, Lord Ram with the help of Lord Kuber - Lord of wealth - showered gold coins from the leaves of Shanu and Apati Tree and the leaves of the trees became gold coins. Kautsa collected the coins and gave 140 million gold coins to Guru Varatantu. The rest of coins were distributed to the needy by Kautsa. This happened on a Dussehra day. To commemorate this event people collect leaves of Apta tree and present it as sona or gold.

Another legend says it is believed that in the Mahabharata, the Pandavas after wandering in the forest for 12 years, hung their weapons on a Shammi tree before entering the court of king Virat to spend the last one year undercover. After the completion on the day of Dussehra, they brought down the weapons from the tree and declared their true identity. Since that time the exchange of Shami leaves on Dussehra day became a symbol of goodwill and victory.

Apta tree, Bauhinia Racemosa, is also known as 'Sonpatta', being considered to be as valuable as gold for its medicinal value. Apta is used as a cure for digestive diseases such as diarrhoea and dysentery & it has anti-tumour qualities and is used to treat the first stages of cancer.

There might be numerous stories associated with the distribution of these leaves, but one thing is that people are always seen to be wishing the good of the other while giving them the leaves.

How To Use The New Rupee Symbol In Your Documents

It's really nice that Indians now have their own currency symbol, but it is still to come up in common fonts available on our PC, so for the time being we need to use an additional font. Here's how you can install the font on your PC and use it.

First download the font Rupee Foradian.

(Windows Users)

Open C:\Windows\Fonts and copy the downloaded file there.

Windows 7 users please check here how to install the font.

(Linux Users)

Copy the downloaded font to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ ; create the directory if required.

Now, start your favourite word processor software and use ` (back-tick) to use rupee symbol by selecting the newly installed font.

Enjoy using the new font.

Programming Fonts

I was getting bored with the same font in my EditPlus editor which I use daily for developement purposes. EditPlus is very good, simple, has syntax highlighting, etc. I wanted to try some different font tried the usual monospaced fonts Fixedsys, Courier, etc. but wasn't quite satisfied with them. After some 'googling' I found a post by Keith Devens listing a good no. of fonts that are suitable for programming, some are even designed for the programming community. Some are free, while a few cost money. Keith has very well explained the need for a specific font for programming and I totally agree with him.

I liked Monaco, installed it, and I'm lovin' it ;-)

My First Smartphone - HTC Legend

I had been following Android news for sometime now, I really liked the concept of an open-source mobile OS and the features provided by the Android OS and it was time I got a new mobile phone because I had cracked the screen of my faithful, 4-year old Sony Ericsson W700i a few months back. So, last week after doing some research on low-budget Android-based mobile phones I finally chose Samsung Galaxy Spica which costs around INR 12,000 but unfortunately Spica wasn't available in Kolkata, so I went ahead with HTC Legend which costed me more than double the price of Spica, but it surely is worth the money.

The HTC Legend sports an aluminum unibody casing, AMOLED capacitive touch screen, 600Mhz processor, 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus, Wi-fi, Bluetooth, 3G-ready , HTC Sense UI & Android 2.1 (Eclair). The customization HTC given to UI is really nice. Played with it a bit, installed a few apps, I'm lovin it :-)

Here are a few drawbacks of the phone I think are important,

Internal memory is less.
Applications can't be installed on the SD card ( will be solved to some extent when updated to Android 2.2 aka FroYo )
Front buttons' build quality & feel could have been better.
Option to customize unlock button ( currently it's the power button )

WebOSS '07 - Web and Open Source Technology Conference

The first of it's kind Web and Open Source Technology Conference was held in Kolkata on 13th Oct, 2007. The venue was School of IT,(formerly IIIT),BF-142, Salt Lake.
The conference started a bit late, myself, Hussain and Naveen, reached the venue early to put up the banners, and distribute t-shirts amonng the volunteers.
The campus' auditorium lacked a sound system, due to some technical difficulty, so w had to shout on top of our voice, the chilling AC made it much more difficult.
Overall, it was a nice experience, the head count was not as impressive as conferences held in Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai, but I am sure Kolkata will soon catch up.

Are college dropouts more successful than people with good education? It would seem so if you consider that many billionaires are people who dumped college. However, what this hides is the fact that although millions quit studies before completing them, very few of them go on to become rich.
What the list of the super-rich dropouts signifies is that in business, a top degree is not as important as having the right aptitude, attitude, determination and vision.

Here are some dropouts who went on to become billionaires:
William Henry Gates III (1955-), along with Paul Allen, co-founded Microsoft Corporation, the world's largest software maker. Bill Gates, the wealthiest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $480 crores (Rs 211,200 crore!), is probably the best-known college dropout.

Gates attended an exclusive prep school in Seattle, went on to study at Harvard University, then dropped out to pursue software development. As students in the mid-70s, he and Paul Allen wrote the original Altair BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800, the first commercially successful PC.
In 1975, Micro-Soft - later Microsoft Corporation - was born. Three decades on, Gates has been Number One on the Forbes 400 for over a dozen years. And here's something you probably didn't know: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation currently provides 90 per cent of the world budget for the attempted eradication of polio.

Larry Ellison

Lawrence Joseph Ellison (1944-) , co-founder and CEO of Oracle Corporation, founded his company in 1977 with a sum of $2,000. Once a school dropout, he is now, according to Forbes, one of the richest people in America with a net worth of around $184 crores. The figure also makes him the ninth richest in the world.

As a young man, Ellison worked for the Ampex Corporation, where one of his projects was a database for the CIA. He called it Oracle, a name he was to reuse years later for the company that made him famous.
Interestingly, the organisation' s initial release was Oracle 2. The number supposedly implied that all bugs had been eliminated from an earlier version.

Dhirubhai Ambani

Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani (1932-2002) was born into the family of a schoolteacher. It was a family of modest means. When he turned 16, Dhirubhai moved to Aden, working first as a gas-station attendant, then as a clerk in an oil company.

He returned to India at 26, starting a business with a meagre capital of $375. By the time of his demise, his company - Reliance Industries Ltd - had grown to become an empire, with an estimated annual turnover of $120 crores!

Dhirubhai was, in his lifetime, conferred the Indian Entrepreneur of the 20th Century Award by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. A Times of India poll in the year 2000 also voted him one of the biggest creators of wealth in this century.

Dhirubhai's is not just the usual rags-to-riches story. He will be remembered as the one who rewrote Indian corporate history and built a truly global corporate group. He is also credited with having single-handedly breathed life into the Indian stock markets and bringing in thousands of investors to the bourses.

Steve Jobs

Steven Paul Jobs (1955-) and Apple Computer are names that have long gone together.

Born in the United States to an unknown Egyptian-Arab father, Jobs was adopted soon after birth. After graduating high school, he enrolled in Reed College, dropping out after one semester.

In 1976, 21-year-old Jobs and 26-year old Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer Co. in the family garage. Jobs revolutionised the industry by popularising the concept of home computers.

By 1984, the Macintosh was introduced. He had an influential role in the building of the World-Wide Web, and also happens to be Chairman and CEO of Pixar Animation Studios.

Today, with the iPod, Apple is bigger than ever. Incidentally, Jobs worked for several years at an annual salary of $1. It got him a listing in the Guinness Book as `Lowest Paid Chief Executive Officer.' He was once gifted a $9 crores jet by the company though. And his net worth? More than $3 billion.

Michael Dell

Michael Saul Dell (1965- ) joined the University of Texas at Austin with the intention of becoming a physician. While studying there, he started a computer company in his dormitory, calling it PC's Limited. By the time he turned 19, it had notched up enough success to prompt Dell to dropout.

In 1987, PC's Limited changed its name to Dell Computer Corporation. By 2003, Dell, Inc. was the world's most profitable PC manufacturer.

Dell has won more than his fair share of accolades, including Man of the Year from PC Magazine and EM>CEO of the Year from Financial World . Forbes, in 2005, lists him as the 18th richest in the world with a net worth of around $1600 Crores. Not bad for just another dropout.

Subhash Chandra Goel

Here's something not many people know about Subhash Chandra Goel : The Zee chairman dropped out after standard 12.

Subhash Chandra started his own vegetable oils unit at 19. It was, in a manner of speaking, his first job. Years later, a casual visit to a friend at Doordarshan gave him the idea of starting his own broadcasting company. We all know how that story ran.

Chandra knew nothing about programming, distribution or film rights. What he did understand quite well was the Indian sensibility though. Funded by UK businessmen, Zee came into being as India's first satellite TV network.
Today, it reaches 320 lakhs homes, connecting with 20 crores people in South Asia alone. The network also covers Asians in America, the Middle East, Europe, Australia and Africa, making this dropout a very rich one.

Our Expectations

A turtle family went on a picnic. The turtles, being naturally slow about things, took seven years to prepare for their outings. Finally the Turtle family left home looking for a suitable place. During the second year of their journey they found it. For about six months they cleaned up the area, unpacked the picnic basket, and completed the arrangements.

Then they discovered they had forgotten the salt. A picnic without salt would be a disaster, they all agreed. After a lengthy discussion, the youngest turtle was chosen to retrieve the salt from home. Although he was the fastest of the slow moving turtles, the little turtle whined, cried, and wobbled in his shell.

He agreed to go on one condition: that no one would eat until he returned. The family consented and the little turtle left. Three years passed and the little turtle had not returned. Five years then Six years... Then in the seventh year of his absence, the oldest turtle could no longer contain his hunger. He announced that he was going to eat and began to unwrap a sandwich. At that point the little turtle suddenly popped out from behind a tree shouting, "SEE I knew you wouldn't wait. Now I am not going to go get the salt."

Lesson Learned:
Some of us waste our time waiting for people to live up to our expectations. We are so concerned about what others are doing that we don't do anything ourselves.

KHURJA (Uttar Pradesh): A four-year-old girl who claims her name is Kalpana Chawla and that she died up in the skies four years ago is drawing huge crowds in a village here in Uttar Pradesh.

Residents of Nar Mohammadpur village, about 35 km from here, where little Upasana is visiting her relatives, think she might be the reincarnation of the India born astronaut Kalpana Chawla, who died when US space shuttle Columbia crashed four years ago.

The news of the girl's claim spread quickly in the area after she spoke to some villagers here.

"I am Kalpana Chawla," says Upasana, who reportedly fears the sight an aircraft. She has been telling her illiterate parents that she died in a "crash" up in the skies.

"Upasana has been telling us ever since she started speaking that her name was Kalpana Chawla and that her father's name was Banarsi Das Chawla but we could not figure out anything as we had never heard of Kalpana," Upasana's father Raj Kumar told reporters on Friday.

Raj Kumar is a resident of Pata village of Etawah district where he works as a labourer.

"Yet Upasana's proclamation led us all to believe that she was actually talking about her previous birth," he said. "She claims that the spacecraft was hit by a huge ball of ice that sent it crashing and ended her life."

Upasana was born barely two months after the astronaut's death in 2003.

Strength And Weakness

A 10-year-old boy decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training the master had taught him only one move.

"Sensei,"(Teacher in Japanese) the boy finally said, "Shouldn't I be learning more moves?" "This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know," the sensei replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament.

Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be over matched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out.

He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened. "No," the sensei insisted, "Let him continue." Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament.

He was the champion. On the way home, the boy and sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

"Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"

"You won for two reasons," the sensei answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm."

The boy's biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

Sometimes we feel that we have certain weaknesses and we blame God, the circumstances or ourselves for it but we never know that our weaknesses can become our strengths one day.

Each of us is special and important, so never think you have any weakness, never think of pride or pain, just live your life to its fullest and extract the best out of it!"

I am a medical student currently doing a rotation in toxicology at the poison control centre. Today, this woman called in very upset because she caught her little daughter eating ants. I quickly reassured her that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her daughter into the hospital. She calmed down and at the end of the conversation happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant poison to eat in order to kill the ants. I told her that she better bring her daughter into the emergency room right away.

Number Two Idiot of 2006

Early this year, some airline employees on the airfield decided to Steal a life raft from one of the 747s. They were successful in getting it out of the plane and home. Shortly after they took it for a float on the river, they noticed a Coast Guard helicopter coming towards them. It turned out that the chopper was homing in on the emergency locator beacon that activated when the raft was inflated. They are no longer employed with the airline.

Here's your award, guys. Don't get it wet; the paint might run.

A true story out of San Francisco : A man, wanting to rob a downtown Bank of America , walked into the branch and wrote "this iz a stikkup. Put all your muny in this bag" While standing in line, waiting to give his note to the teller, he began to worry that someone had seen him write the note and might call the police before he reached the teller's window. So he left the Bank of America and crossed the street to Wells Fargo . After waiting a Few minutes in line, he handed his note to the Wells Fargo teller.

She read it and, surmising from his spelling errors that he wasn't the brightest light in the street told him that she could not accept his stickup note because it was written on a Bank of America deposit slip and that he would either have to fill out a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to Bank of America. Looking somewhat defeated, the man said, "OK" and left. He was Arrested a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at Bank of America .

Don't bother with this guy's award. He probably couldn't read it anyway.

Number four Idiot of 2006

Arkansas: Seems this guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a brick through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the brick and heaved it over his head at the window. The brick bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. It seems the liquor store window was made of Flexi-Glass. The whole event was caught on videotape.

Oh, that's smart. Give him his award.

Number Five Idiot of 2006

A guy walked into a little corner store with a shotgun and demanded all of the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in a bag,the robber saw a bottle of Scotch that he wanted behind the counter on the shelf. He told the cashier to put it in the bag as well, but the cashier refused and said, "Because I don't believe you are over 21. The robber said he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to him because he didn't believe him. At this point, the robber took his driver's license out of his wallet and gave it to the clerk. The clerk looked it over and agreed that the man was in fact over 21 and he put the Scotch in the bag. The robber then ran from the store with his loot. The cashier promptly called the police and gave the name and address of the robber that he got off the license. They arrested the robber two hours later.

The famous golden arches of McDonald’s went up on a Park Street address on Thursday, not far from KFC, the other American food icon. You can dig into a Mc-Chicken burgers on Friday.

McDonald’s is stepping into Kolkata more than a decade after it opened its first outlet in India (Delhi) but it comes with a slew of expansion plans. There will be at least three more outlets in Kolkata by the year-end, said McDonald’s India managing director (north and east) Vikram Bakshi. “We are extremely bullish on Kolkata. Over the next four years, a fourth of countrywide investments will happen here. Altogether, Rs 100 crore will be pumped into 15-20 outlets in the city,” Bakshi said.

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day & said 'Lord, I would like to know what Heaven & Hell are like.'

The Lord led the holy man to two doors.

He opened one of the doors & the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious & made the holy man's mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin & sickly. They appeared to be famished.

They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms & each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew & take a spoonful.

But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery & suffering.

The Lord said, 'You have seen Hell.'

They went to the next room & opened the door.

It was exactly the same as the first one.

There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water.

The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished & plump, laughing & talking.

The holy man said, 'I don't understand.'

'It is simple,' said the Lord. 'It requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.'

Microwaved Water

A 26-year old man decided to have a cup of coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that the water was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup "blew up" into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1^st and 2^nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.

He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc., (nothing metal).

It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a tea kettle.

General Electric's Response:

Thanks for contacting us, I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach the boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.

To! prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds! before moving it or adding anything into it.

Here is what our local science teacher had to say on the matter:

"Thanks for the microwave warning. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur anytime water is heated and will particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new, or when heating a small amount of water (less than half a cup).

What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapor bubbles can form. If the cup is very new then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point.

What then usually happens is that the liquid is bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beverage spews when opened after having been shaken."

Bridge - A Short Story

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the 1st serious rift in 40 yrs of farming side by side, sharing machinery, & trading labor & goods as needed without a hitch.

Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding & it grew into a major difference, & finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning there was a knock on Jai's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days work" he said. Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here & there. Could I help you?"

"Yes, I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. It's my younger brother, Ajay. Last week there was a meadow between us & he took his bulldozer to the river levee & now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I'll go him one better. See that pile of lumber curing by the barn? I want u to build me a fence, so I won't need to see his place anymore. Cool him down, anyhow."

The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails & the post-hole digger & I'll be able to do a job that pleases you."

The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing.

About sunset when the Jai returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. He saw there was no fence there at all. It was a bridge... a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work handrails & all - & the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.

"You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I've said & done."

The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, & then they met in the middle, taking each other's hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder. "No, wait! Stay a few days. I've a lot of other projects for you," said the Jai.

"I'd love to stay on," the carpenter said, "But, I have many more Bridges to build."

It was the day of my son's XII results and I was so tensed. I sat beside him while he logged on the website with his registration no.
"Ma", he screamed in excitement," I scored 1191, with cent um in 4 subjects. I cant believe it. "
I kinda became numb in my excitement. My eyes became wet. I kissed him on his forehead and smiled.

Soon we realized that he stood first in the state. Oh, my joy knew no bounds when Reporters and media persons soon swamped my house for interviews and photos. I was so honored to join him in the snaps.

I wanted to call my "wrong-number-friend to tell him the news......I was so excited.
He was someone whom I have known for more than 20 years.

I still do not remember when we became friends, but certainly cannot forget the first day he called me when I blasted him for giving me so many wrong calls.....after that he had called up a week later asking apology, for he
had now got the right no of his friend whom he wanted to talk to .We spoke for an hour that day...even without knowing each other's Though he kept pestering me to reveal my name I never did and so he kept a name...Sweety. I used to get so shy whenever he called me 'Sweety'. I was doing first year of BSc. Maths then, and he was a Computer Engineering student.

From then he used to call me very often . We almost discussed everything ..

By the final year of my college, we probably we were in love, but I had been cautious. I was in a dilemma whether to tell him. But what if he was of a different religion? Do I have the courage to talk to my parents about
it ?........all these questions ran through my mind.

I decided I'll not talk to him thereafter. When he called next time I lied to him I that I was going to Delhi for my post graduation. He gave me his office number and asked me to ring him up once I reach there. I never called .......

A couple of months later my marriage got fixed with a guy of my parent's choice. I was not happy but I did not complain; rather accepted it as an obedient daughter. At times I felt I missed my wrong- number- friend.......

My hubby was a moody person; I have hardly spent any good time with him,but he was genuine indeed and never bothered my personal space. After 2 years we had a boy...Yet,I was not very happy with my married life...One
day I happened to browse through my diary and found I still had my old friend's office phone no that he had given me. I dialed it and spoke with him. He said he was married and got a kid too. I was happy for him though in the bottom of the heart I felt bad that I could not marry him.

From then I used to occasionally call him on that number. I never gave him mine as I felt that would put me in trouble...And till today I almost shared everything with him including my relationship with my hubby.....today I was so happy and I wanted to call him.

Just then I got a call. "Your husband met with an accident and died on the spot"

I banged the phone down. I broke. I did not call my friend.....I somehow started feeling guilty. I have never tried to talk to him properly when he was alive or moved close with him.... I felt I had been a bad wife........

A couple of years passed and one day my son brought home a Bengali girl and said they wanted to get married. I got them married as I did not want my son to go through what I did.

I decided to give my son his father's room and started clearing it. There was a phone book. I gently opened it to find, " Wrong no Sweety -26579785"

God always puts the right numbers together. Its we who interpret it wrong!!!

Recently in The Times of India there was an article / advertisement about Pizza delivery Companies which guarantees you free pizza if they fail to deliver within the specified time (like 30 minutes). Have you ever wondered who pays for the free pizzas??

Well, the delivery boy is made to pay for the pizza. They are paid such low wages and the price of the pizza is deducted from their monthly wages which can amount to upto 60% in some months (It becomes difficult to run their family). To deliver the pizzas the delivery boys take high traffic risks as delivery becomes their priority. Their life and safety risks are neither looked into by the Pizza Shop Management nor the Pizza Delivery Boy himself. (They are more concerned to avoid the deduction from their salary).

If this type of exploitation is carried on in your city's pizza logistics we should stop availing the home delivery system, because to deliver our pizza one person may be risking his life. Is the life of an Indian citizen so cheap and of no value? In case he is late in delivering the pizza, we are enjoying the free pizza at the hard earned money of a poor delivery boy. Is it fair or right on our part to do it?

As a human, please think and if you feel that this is wrong, please spread the message and stop having the so called FREE pizzas delivered at home.

Howrah Bridge - Engineering Marvel

Calcutta boasts the third largest cantilever bridge in the world. Its real importance, however, lies in the fact that it serves as Calcutta's gateway to the west, being the city's only bridge spanning the Hooghly. Taking 7 years to build, it cost $10,000,000. A Small Letter, A Big Change

Okhil Chandra Sen wrote this letter to the Sahibganj divisional railway office in 1909. It is on display at the Railway Museum in New Delhi. It was also reproduced under the caption "Travelers' Tales" in the Far Eastern Economic Review

Okhil Babu's letter to the Railway Department :

"I am arrive by passenger train Ahmedpur station and my belly is too much swelling with jackfruit. I am therefore went to privy. Just I doing the nuisance that guard making whistle blow for train to go off and I am running with 'lotah' in one hand and 'dhoti' in the next when I am fall over and expose all my shocking to man and female women on plateform. I am got leaved at Ahmedpur station.

This too much bad, if passenger go to make dung that dam guard not wait train five minutes for him. I am therefore pray your honour to make big fine on that guard for public sake. Otherwise I am making big report to papers."

Holi - the festival of colours (I presume, I am not sure though) - was wonderful today, I enjoyed it today after a break last year.
Initially, I had no plans to celebrate Holi, 'cause most of my friends weren't celebrating and it's no fun celebrating alone. Gokul & Sanju dropped in at my place around 10 in the morning and coaxed me to join them.
I wasn't sure of the reason behind celebrating Holi, so I looked up Holi in Wikipedia. Even you can read about it here.

The Sardars And 12 O'clock

Here is an incident about the sardars and 12 O'clock this is the story that my friend told me:

"I was standing at dadar station when my attention went towards a Sikh youth standing near me wearing a Black turban having a long beard and wearing a kirpan over his shirt.

After a while, one local train arrived, which was totally packed. The Sikh youth tried to alight the train but failed to do so. Just then a voice was heard from the back coach 'Sardarji Barah Baj gaye' (Sir it's 12 o'clock!)

The Sikh youth looked over at that voice maker who was a young Mischievous type of person and instead of showing any anger made a smile towards him. The smile made was so enigmatic that it seemed as if some type of truth lies behind it. Not able to resist my temptation, I walked towards him and asked why did he smile at that person who teased him. The Sikh youth replied, 'He was not teasing me but was asking for my Help'. I was surprised with these words and he told me that there was a big history behind that which one should know. I was eager to know the History and the Sikh youth narrated:

During 17th Century, when Hindustan was ruled by Mughals, all the Hindu people were humiliated and were treated like animals. Mughals treated the Hindu women as there own property and were forcing all Hindus to accept Islam and even used to kill the people if they were refusing to accept.That time , our ninth Guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadarji came forward,in response to a request of some Kashmir Pandits to fight against all these cruel activities. Guruji told the Mughal emperor that if he could succeed in converting him to Islam, all the Hindus would accept the same.
But, if he failed, he should stop all those activities . The Mughal emperor happily agreed to that but even after lots of torture to Guruji and his fellow members he failed to convert him to Islam and Guruji along with his other four fellow members, were tortured and sacrificed their lives in Chandni Chowk. Since the Mughals were unable to convert them to Islam they were assassinated.

Thus Guruji sacrificed his life for the protection of Hindu religion. Can anybody lay down his life and that too for the protection of another religion? This is the reason he is still remembered as "Hind Ki Chaddar", shield of India . For the sake of whom he had sacrificed his life, none of the them came forward to lift his body, fearing that they would also be assassinated.Seeing this incident our 10th Guruji, Sri Guru Gobind Singhji (Son of Guru Teg Bahadarji) founder of khalsa made a resolution that he would convert his followers to such human beings who would not be able to hide themselves and could be easily located in thousands.

At the start, the Sikhs were very few in numbers as they were fighting against the Mughal emperors. At that time, Nadir Shah raided Delhi in the year 1739 and looted Hindustan and was carrying lot of Hindustan treasures and nearly 2200 Hindu women along with him. The news spread like a fire and was heard by Sardar Jassa Singh who was the Commander of the Sikh army at that time. He decided to attack Nadir Shah's Kafila on the same midnight .He did so and rescued all the Hindu women and they were safely sent to their homes.

It didn't happen only once but thereafter whenever any Abdaalis or Iranis had attacked and looted Hindustan and were trying to carry the treasures and Hindu women along with them for selling them in Abdal markets, the Sikh army although fewer in numbers but were brave hearted a nd attacked them at midnight ,12 O'clock and rescued women.

After that time when there occurred a similar incidence, people started to contact the Sikh army for their help and Sikhs used to attack the raider's at Midnight, 12 O'clock. Nowadays, these "smart people" and some Sikh enemies who are afraid of Sikhs, have spread these words that at 12 O'clock, the Sikhs go out of their senses. This historic fact was the reason which made me smile over that person as I thought that his Mother or Sister would be in trouble and wants my help and was reminding me by saying off 'Sardarji Barah Baj Gaye' "

How to know you are a computer buff?

If you wonder wether you are a computer buff or not, please check for the signs listed below, the more signs you posses the closer you are to geekdom.
I share quite a few of them, and some which are freakishly uncommon and not listed below, like a few times i had HTML,PHP & JavaScript dreams.

When asked about a bus schedule, you wonder if it is 16 or 32 bits.
When counting objects, 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D..
At the departmental store, you check to see if a kilogram is 1024 grams, a litre is 1024 mls.
When you dream, you are going to dream in 256 palettes of 256 colors.
When your wife says "If you don't turn off that damn machine and come to sleep, then I am going to divorce you!",you are going to scream at her for omitting the "else" clause.
You try to sleep, and think : sleep(8 * 60 * 60); /* sleep for 8 hours */
When you are reading a book, you would look for the scroll bar to get to the next page.
If you want to call somebody you pick up the phone and start dialling an IP number...
You are going to look for an icon to double-click, to open your bedroom window.
When you go to balance your check book, you would discover that you'll be doing the math in octal.
You would look for a trash can icon to throw garbage.
When you get in the elevator you would double-click the button for the floor you want to go.

Google Mania

Google is spreading even faster than a fire in a jungle. Even li'l cutie-pie & sweetie-pies are aware of google, I guess they use google to search for prettier dolls ;-)
Google inaugurated its London office last week, so they held a competition where school kids were allowed to make their own Google Doodles (a Google Doodle is the name given to the variations of Google's logo that appear on the website on special occasions) from the Google logo. The kids did a fantastic job with all sorts of themes, ranging from serious topics like the Asian tsunami and the Battle of Trafalgar to an entire logo transformed into a bunch of eyes staring at each other.
As of now I don't see any limits of Google growth, so all of you keep Googling.

Date Comparison in JavaScript

The Date class in JavaScript can also be used for date comparison, like if someone would want to take a date after today as input, they can put the Date class to use to perform a checking on the inputed date.

Defining Dates
To be able to use the Date class we need to define objects of that type. To do this we use a command very similar to that which we used to define arrays.

The way to define an object as a date is like this:

var myDate = new Date;

The date object will automatically be assigned the current date and time as its initial value. We can easily override the component parts of the date by using the various methods available for manipulating dates.

For example, to set our date object to 15th April 2006 you can specify the following immediately after the above declaration:

myDate.setDate(15);
myDate.setMonth(3); // January = 0
myDate.setFullYear(2006);

Comparing Dates
One of the most useful areas where using the date class is useful is where you need to either compare two dates or to change a date or time by a specified amount. For example let's say that we want to compare today's date with the 15th April 2006. Is today before or after that date? To do this we need to add the following code to what we have already defined above:

var today = new Date;
if (myDate < today)
alert('today is before 16th April 2006');
else
alert('today is after 15th April 2006');

Note that since the time of setting the today object is after that of setting the myDate object we know that myDate will still be less than today on that date itself (as we have not changed the value held in any of the time portions of either object from that originally set).
Earlier I didn't posses in-depth knowledge of these in-built JavaScript, which no matter come in handy & also save you a lot of trouble. Hope this post helps someone.

Google Base enables content owners to easily make their information searchable online. Anyone, from large companies to website owners and individuals, can use it to submit their content in the form of data items. We'll host the items and make them searchable for free.

The whole IP department at times speak and crack jokes in computer lingo, which non-technical people often don't seem to understand.The computer lingo has delved in to Pallav to such an extent that once he was giving a friend of his directions to residence, he was like "There's a green door, and beside it is a bell, just double click on that and I open the door". :P

Today morning I was checking my mails, and one the mails was from "Revathi", I know her through emails only. She read an year old post of mine titled "What's Right What's Wrong", this was a post on a discussion between me & chaman about what was right for women/men & what's not.Revathi wanted add some points too, here is an excerpt of her mail:

jus to let u know, i read ur blog..... One of the things i read abt was - a
conversation between ur frnd -chaman and u . it was abt wht is wrong and
right for a man and woman....it was posted a year ago i.e 16th june 2004....
it was an interesting one...jus felt like adding a few lines to it....
As we grow older ,the world becomes more and more strange to

We view the world with our set of perceptions......Honestly,,our
conditioning in our household plays a vital role in influencing the way we

for example for my mom ,,drinking is a crime...It was drilled in my

not bad,,its jus awrong habit..
As a girl,i decide whts right and wrong for me ,depending on the way i was
bought up and also depending on the ppl I hang out with....
The debate abt men and women is been going on since ages........I believe
its alll very subjective..Its just the way u look at it....Talking abt the
line which said:- Both husband and wife should leave their house and stay
separately,but i believe that rarely happens...from whtever I have seen,i
know tht Ego runs in a man's blood. Adjustment is something which men will
never do.....they would never like to leave their parents ...Adjustment,
sacrifice ,compromise.....everything has to be done by women and tht's whY
MEN ARE MEN AND WOMEN ARE WOMEN,,,,,,,,,,,,

Well,,,,i guess I blaberred enough.......Its just and ongoing
thing.....Each one is entitled to their own opinion...I owe nuting to the
outside world ...Therefore,i believe in wht i want to ....if outsiders dnt
then fine....Just let it be....no one is right or wrong,,it is just your
opinion......

Two to-be engineers whom I have known since schooldays, this is a tale about them. I would not like to say their names so I'll address them as X & Y.
It happened once when X got a new computer, now X wasn't a geek and neither very familiar with computers although he had studied computers throughout school from class VI and also pursuing his engineering degree in IT, so this was when he asked whether I could install Windows XP for him, and I like helping people out, so I did. The very next day he calls up and says there's no sound coming from his speakers and when I went to his place, what I say was that the system audio was muted, any kid would know that the volume controls are the first things to be checked when don't hear any sound from your TV,music system or computer. I asked him to experiment with his computer, by doing so he'll get accustomed to it's features. The next time I get a call from him was around a week later, he complains that he can't plug in his mouse, I told him that it was very easy, just like the headphone jack or telephone jack, but he says that he isn't able to do it. So I goto his place, and OMG! he screwed the mouse jack, newer mice mostly have P/S 2 ports which has 8 pins, all you have to do is just push it in with the arrow on the jack to the right. He tried to plug it by turning it left and right as the result the pins were all bent & twisted, I had to straighten the pins with a narrow headed screw driver, I plugged it in and everything was fine. This was almost 6 months back, and last week I again received a call from him with the same problem, and I found he had done the same thing, what kind of an engineer is he who doesn't know how to plug in a mouse?? He got a job in Wipro Infotech.
The second guy Y, I thought he had good knowledge of computers, though he called me in to re-install his system when it crashed every now and then. A few days back, we were just chatting about computers & technology when the terms relative path & absolute path popped up, and he asks, "What is that?" I was astonished, a final year engineering student asks me what relative path & absolute path is. He got a job in TCS.
I won't say that all engineers are like X & Y but most of them I know are like them. The saddest part is that when MNC's like TCS & Infosys recruit they only want engineering graduates, whereas there are other people who dont have an engineering degree but have 50 times better knowledge and concept than some engineering graduates. Why is it so?

INOX again

My fisrt movie experience at INOX was watching 'Day After Tomorrow' with chaman, it was fun. I again visited INOX for the second time with Asha, and we watched 'Maine Pyar Kyu Kiya', it was a hilarious movie, we enjoyed the movie throughout, I also got to taste Caramel Popcorn which was unavailable last time.
INOX is worth the money, for 100 bucks the ambience was wonderful.
Got more to write about some other things, but right now I need to leave, 'cause its 10 minutes past office hours, and I had thought of leaving early.

Ever since MSN Messenger introduced winks in addition to smileys, we haven't seen any new winks, new winks were available but weren't free. And we all desperately wanted some new winks, one day I started off my search for newer winks, and finally I laid my hands on a pack on cool winks, which was instantly transmitted all over the office.

Hello! That ain't a greeting, its Google's photo sharing software. It's wonderful, while exploring Hello yesterday we discovered some emoticons (Hello refers to emoticons as Motio). Like the falling heart, LOL, and various other smileys.

Hello guys,
It has been quite a long time since my last post, well I had been preoccupied with some work, office work of course. All these days I had planned about writing about a lot of things, but couldn't get to start blogging. I wanted to write about Sattu, Avik, Sohini, Asha, Tanaz, about Mumbai rains, and something about myself too.
Anyway, tomorrow Sattu is taking us out for lunch, hopefully we'll have lots of fun. And probably tomorrow I'll have much less work to do. Oh! by the way, Sattu's lingo is a big hit, the lingo is not restricted to the boundaries of our office or the city, it has travelled all the way to Mumbai too. That's a big 'achivement' for Sattu I guess.
It's quite late in the night and I am dead sleepy, will post later.

Coding Blues

Do you comment, document and indent your code well??
If not, please do from now on. Well, otherwise the code will freak you out when you are bug hunting or trying to upgrade the code. Trust me, whatever I say is from sheer experience.
I wrote the script for generating the company staff chart a couple of weeks back, but yesterday I modified it to incorporate some major features into it. Since the starting the code wasn't well commented or intended, so when they found a bug in it, I cooly opened EditPlus to start bug hunting, but sadly enough it all seemed like hieroglyphs to me.
I was going through the code, trying every bug hunting technique that came into my mind, I was speaking all tapori lingo while doing so, like "Code mein kuch locha hai", "Is code ki toh maa behen ek ho gayi". LOL!
Anyway, lesson of the day was : To keep bugs away, code cleanly.
Although, I found the bug and fixed it, I was still reluctant to clean up my code due to the fear of any more bugs cropping up.

Today it's sweetu's b'day, I wanted to be the first one to wish her so I called her up at around 12:00 AM but my call was on wait, sure to be someone had already wished her before me, the same happened on Asha's b'day I could only be the second one to wish her :( I am always late. Exams

My exams started on Saturday, the first paper was IT Tools and Applications.It tested the students' rudimetary computer knowledge and skills. It was a very easy paper, the first part contained objective type questions of 40marks, and guess what, I did every single one of the them correct. The second part contained questions with marks ranging from 3 to 5, it went good too. There was this girl sitting beside me, she came late, then she was looking nervous, so i thought of helping her out, so i helped her out with the objective type questions. I thought that would be good, now she can manage the rest herself, no she copied my whole paper, she didn't even write a single line herself, she was looking at my answer sheet and copying it into hers, I got very pissed off at this. You can ask for help for a few questions, but copying the whole paper is bad!
The next paper was Business Systems, it was ok-ok kind, 'cause I have no freaking idea about Accounts, there were lots of questions on them, like there was short notes on Trial Balanace for 5marks, what I wrote must be all crap. :P I thought i would at least get to do some decent FoxPro programs, but it wasn't my paper :( there was this junk program, only 15 lines of code, although i did it i wasn't satisfied with my paper!

What's with the heading of the post? you might be wondering! Actually, that's the name Asha gave me y'day. The reason being, girls. Err..let me explian, most of the times when i speak to her I mention about some girl or the other, and she would say,"Tell me something, do you even know sny guy??" Hehehe! So yesterday, I had my exam, I reached early took a seat in the middle, there wasn't anyone sitting even 2-3 benches away from me, and by 2 o'clock the room was full and I suddenly realised that I was surrounded by girls, only girls, there were only a handful of guys, that too in the last bench. Prior to that I met this mallu girl at the University gate and I had told this to Asha, when she called up before the exam, so she told me that my exam hall will be full of girls, and so it was. After the exams I told her that she was so correct, and she said that i was "kishan" and those were all "gopis" around me, LOL! So, she started calling me "Gopalakrishna".
How's my new name guys??

GMail Boom!

A few minutes back when I logged into GMail i noticed that I am using 255MB (11%) of my storage quota. In retrospection, i remember the days of Hotmail with just 2MB storage, I had to check my mail frequently (it's not that I don't do it now) to keep below storage limits. Then, i couldn't even dream of storing 255MB of mails, but now there is more than 2400MB of space. GMail revolutinsed email storage, all providers had to upgrade storage features to stand competition, as a result I already have a 2000MB MSN account, and Hotmail will soon be upgraded to 250MB. GMail with its new technology is far more superior to any other mail service, and it also supports POP3 and SMTP. It's uses the new efficent technology called AJAX allows pre-fetching of mails, so that while we read one mail, the others are silently fetched in the background which makes it appear faster and efficient, actually it is, it uses the idle bandwidth to fetch data.

Boys are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree.
The girls don't want to reach for the good ones because they're afraid of falling and getting hurt. Instead they just get the rotten apples that are on the ground, that aren't as good, but easy.
So the apples at the top think that there is something wrong with them,when! in reality, they are amazing.
That is why we just have to be a little patient and the right girl, the one who takes a chance to find the good, right apple, will come someday...

So Guys if you are alone...this means that you are on top....so be confident and wait for your time....

Hello Weekend

It's weekend again. What does that mean? well, it means we'll have to spend only half-day in the office, the evening I can freak out, which isn't possible as of now, 'cause my exams are due next weekend.
It has been an interesting day at office so far, no a single bit of work, i blogged, emailed, introduced Avik and Reenee to blogging, both of them are too excited about their blogs.
Y'day my old chum left the city to get settled in Jaipur, i had been to the station to see him off, although it wasn't a sentimental situation, i was feeling sad on my way back from the station. Friends are very precious and delicate, and we sometimes don't realize their value, until they are far away or we completely lose them. I already miss him, like the way I miss chaman.
I really hope that, i get to meet Radhesh soon....and chaman too.
Later in the afternoon, i got to meet Sahil, my cousin sis' boyfriend.
